I promise to guide you through the wonderful world of wine with honesty, enthusiasm, and a touch of humor.
Wine isn't just a drink; it's a journey of discovery, a celebration of culture, and a gateway to shared experiences. Read my journey below.
The Spark
The cool Napa Valley air nipped at my cheeks as I stepped into a cozy log cabin that March morning. Little did I know that at 9 am, my life was about to change. As the ruby-red liquid swirled in my glass, its earthy aroma mingling with hints of cherry and spice, I took my first sip of "Lola" - a Pinot Noir named after the winemaker's faithful companion.
The silky tannins danced on my tongue, revealing layers of complexity I had never experienced before. But it wasn't just the taste that captivated me; it was the story behind the wine. The winemaker's passion shone through as they explained their innovative use of concrete in the fermentation process, marrying tradition with modern techniques.
At that moment, my microbiology background suddenly found new purpose. The elegant dance of science and artistry in that glass of Pinot Noir ignited a passion that would shape my future.
My thirst for understanding led me to pursue formal education in wine.
I threw myself into studies, completing WSET levels 2 & 3, French Wine Scholar, and Italian Wine Scholar certifications. Each course deepened my appreciation for the intricate world of wine.
From that day forward, wine became more than just a beverage - it was a portal to new cultures, a subject of study, and, eventually, a calling. Every trip became an opportunity to explore vineyards and cellars, each tasting a chance to expand my palate and knowledge.
But a trip to Priorat, nestled in the rugged hills of Catalonia, solidified my resolve. I watched the winemaker work his magic at Perinet winery, surrounded by ancient vines clinging to steep slate slopes. The alchemy of transforming grapes into liquid art fascinated me, and I knew then that I wanted to be more than an observer - I wanted to be a creator.
In 2020, amidst global uncertainty, I took a leap of faith.
I left the security of my banking career to immerse myself in the world of wine. My journey took me to the sun-drenched vineyards of Cape Town, where I interned at Groot Constantia. For two months, I lived and breathed winemaking - from sampling grapes under the African sun to analyzing fermentation in the cool darkness of the cellar.
The experience only fueled my passion further. In September of that year, I enrolled in Plumpton College to pursue a Masters in Viticulture & Oenology. The program was challenging, but every lesson brought me closer to my dream. I delved deep into the science of wine, from the microbiology of fermentation to the impact of climate on grape cultivation.
